As spring awakens and students gear up for the end of the third quarter, a dedicated group of peers is stepping forward to offer their math skills to those in need. Their efforts can make a significant difference, as progress reports are about to be solidified in a student’s GPA and shaping the future for everyone involved. Together, they embody the spirit of the Bonney Lake Math Club.
The Bonney Lake Math Club was established three years ago, and with the help of Spanish teacher Roni Thompson, it cultivates kids from Bonney Lake to be leaders in their community by volunteering to aid other students in BLHS and the neighboring Mountain View Middle School. Along with gaining experience through tutoring, these mathletes have a chance to earn scholarships and opportunities in math-related fields due to their services and excellent arithmetic knowledge.
Currently, our Mathletes are getting ready for a math competition held at Thomas Jefferson High School starting March 15 at 10-2. To prepare for the competition, the Mathletes look at past tests from MuAlphaTheta.org, an international mathematics honor society that hosts rigorous math competitions throughout the school year.
Along with juggling a major event, our mathletes are still supporting the students of Bonney Lake and beyond, helping with all levels of math homework, including compounding interests, Logarithms, Multiplying Polynomials, and Quadratic Equations, etc, along with working on their multiple pages of grueling homework each night. From sun up until sun down, they have to manage their time efficiently and finish their school work while also aiding kids that have trouble understanding the concepts they’ve been learning in math.
For all the Mathletes competing, here is a message from your advisor. “I like to see my students try and have fun. We’re so new, so we’re still figuring things out, but it brings me joy to see students love the process and bond outside of school. We’re hoping to build the club into a place where any student can find support and learn the importance of math in every aspect of life. ”
If you’re considering joining the competing mathletes or becoming a tutor, we encourage you to join us on Monday during their regular meetings to learn more about the opportunity and get a chance to ask questions to see if it’s the right fit for you. For further details or if you can’t make it on Monday, feel free to meet with Mrs. Thompson, our advisor, in the 400 flex room. Alternatively, you can also reach out to Kaden Frisch, the Club President, who will be happy to answer any questions you have.
